Should LUU oppose sexual objectification?
Name of proposer:
Harriet Rankin
Idea Title:
Should LUU oppose sexual objectification?
What the idea is about:
Nothing that LUU does will objectify anyone- in it's events & venues, facilities, and commercial activities.
No use of a person's sexualised body should be used to sell, promote, or decorate anything in any of LUU's building or activities.
LUU should affiliate with the 'Object' campaign, and work to achieve the aims of the organisation.
LUU should remove magazines that sexually objectify from sale in the Union building.
LUU should consult with it's societies with the aim of helping them to prevent objectification from appearing in its activity.
Why have you proposed it?:
The Union is for everyone, and should be a safe space for all. Students should feel comfortable and powerful in their union, free from intimidation of the constant array of 'ideal',sexualised figures on display.
This idea is not anti-sex or anti-nudity, it is about a person's sexualised body being used to sell or promote something, buying into gender stereotypes. Sexual self-expression should always be supported.
Definition (taken from trusty wikipedia): Objectification is an attitude that regards a person as a commodity or as an object for use, with little or no regard for a person's personality or sentience. Sexual objectification refers to the practice of regarding or treating another person merely as an instrument (object) towards one's sexual pleasure.
