Should the Union lobby the University for better step-free access?

Proposer name:

William Noble

What the idea is about:

The Union should lobby the University to ensure that step-free access is available for longer. Two particular areas where step-free access is part time include the corridor separating the Refectory and the Union, which should be open when the Union is, and the entire North-South access route, which should be open to all until 8pm.

Why have you proposed it?:

Disabled and impaired students don't stop being impaired at 5pm, but some parts of the University vital to step-free access close then. The Worsley and Roger Stevens buildings close well before the last LeedsCityBus, making access to campus from the City Centre more difficult, and the closure of the Lounge and Refectory between 5pm and 6pm make access to the meeting rooms on Level 2, which are often in use until the Union closes, impossible for impaired students.

Outcome

The idea passed, with the panel voting 13:0 (Yes:No)

7:36am on 30 Oct 11 I went to the uni on Saturday and had to use the Brotherton steps as the Baines Wing is apparently kept locked on a weekend. I walk with two sticks and while I CAN do steps at a push I really don't like doing them! I don't know if this is part of the red route, accessible with the key? (I haven't got one yet, not applied as I'm usually at the business school)
