PROLIFIC BURGLAR JAILED FOR 4 YEARS

Wed 01 Feb 2012

Knowledge

Jason Higo, a prolific house burglar with 72 convictions for 30 offences, and his partner Stephen O'Leary, have been sent to prison.

The pair broke into an address on the 14th December to steal items to sell on. They then broke into the same house later on that day to steal more items, but were distrubed by the owner. She contacted the police who caught the pair exiting the property with a rucksack full of property.

Higo was jailed for four years and O'Leary was given an 18 month sentence for his role in the burglary.

STAYING SAFE OVER CHRISTMAS

Tue 20 Dec 2011

Now that university has finished for the year, many of you will have returned home for Christmas.

However some students will remain in Leeds during some or all of the holiday period. So here’s some useful information if you’re going to be in Leeds over the next three weeks:

  • University security teams work 24/7, 365 days a year. To contact them in an emergency call 0113 343 2222 (Leeds University), 0113 812 444 (Leeds Met).
  • The Leeds University Union Nightbus is not in operation over Christmas, and will return to service on the 9th January 2012. Timetables have yet to be confirmed, so check back here in the new year.
  • Remember to stick to well lit streets at night, and try to avoid walking home alone. If you run out of money on a Christmas night out, remember you can use your student card and get your Union to pay for your Amber Taxi home.

Hope you have a great Christmas and a safe 2012.

GET HOME SAFELY

Tue 08 Nov 2011

Knowledge

Whether it's the Nightbus, an Amber taxi or simply sticking with your mates - get home safely this Winter.

It’s the time of year for lots of celebrations, but it’s still really important to take measures so you and your friends stay safe when out and about – and especially when you’re getting home. Here's how to do it:

1. Stay with your mates. The easiest one to do; don't walk home from a night out by yourself. Stick with your mates and make sure everyone gets home alright. Keep in contact with each other - don’t just wander off and not let your friends know where you are.

2. Stay to well-lit areas. That quiet street may look calm, but it's anyone's guess who’s lurking in the dark, so stick to areas where you can see what’s what.

3. Take cheap and safe transport home.

Nightbus. The LUU Nightbus will take you right to your doorstep for just 50p. Book it from the front of the Union building with the Security staff an hour before. The timetable changes, so remember to check online or at the front of the Union. To access the timetable, go to:

www.leedsuniversityunion.org.uk/helpandadvice/healthandwellbeing/gethomesafe/

Amber Cars. Take advantage of the Amber Cars Student ID scheme to get home after dark. Call them on 0113 2311366 – keep the number in your phone – and tell them you want to pay with your student card and collect your card from LUU helpdesk the next day.

PROPERTY MARKING AT LEEDS MET

Wed 23 Nov 2011

Knowledge

The Hermes Property Marking System will revolutionise student property marking

The traditional UV pen property marking system has now been superseded by Hermes Property Registration equipment, something that promises to make a huge impact on the levels of burglaries and robberies in both the private rented sector and campus accommodation.

The Hermes system is linked to the National Property Registration site Immobilise, which in turn is linked to the National Police Index. The system works as follows: - students are visited by University Security / Leeds North West NPT Officers and input their details name, address, email, etc onto the registration screen of the Immobilise site (through a portable laptop). They will subsequently receive an email from Immobilise containing a life-long account number.

The Hermes kit contains a scanning gun so that when registration is completed the Security Officer or Police Officer simply has to touch the bar code of items, which will then automatically be registered to the student’s account. Once the student has received an account number, they can send an email with the serial number/bar code number of any new electrical items; if they lose registered property or sell items, an email to Immobilise will again update the system. If the police recover a lost or stolen item, the Hermes system ensures a quicker return of property to the rightful owner.

Not only can Hermes be used to find the appropriate owner of recovered lost/stolen goods, it can also be transported to known outlets of stolen property (i.e. second hand shops, addresses of known burglars and even on suspected thieves in the street).

This will drastically cut down the market for receivers of stolen property, effectively cutting down on thieves’ ability to make profit from the items they steal. Use of Hermes is due to commence at Leeds Met at the end of November/beginning of December so look out for property registration dates circulated over Leeds Met media. Over a three year period all first year students, staff members and Leeds Met students living in the private sector will be registered.

Property marking will also be conducted at Leeds University in the near future (dates TBC).

Taken together, this amounts to a huge deterrent to criminals targeting students in Leeds, as well as those profiting from stolen property.
