See what Neighbourhood Watch is all about...
In 2009/10, twelve Neighbourhood Watch Student Coordinators (NWSCs) were recruited to help prevent other students from becoming victims of crime, as well as to offer support and guidance for those who did unfortunately become victims. This was the first student-led Nieghbourhood Watch Scheme in the country, and a lot of the NWSCs actions were based on feedback from other students.
The NWSCs act as a link between students, police and permanent residents living in the community. They were each allocated a part of the main areas where students live, places like Burley, Hyde Park, Headingley, Little Woodhouse and Woodhouse and Little London. During the year they visited over 600 properties in their areas to speak to residents about their concerns and to give out the latest crime statistics. They also recruited over 50 volunteers to support them in their areas, gave out over 300 pieces of home safety equipment and helped the West Yorkshire Police on 5 Operation Balloon sessions.
Rose Hampton, LUU Development Coordinator, has been heavily involved in setting up the scheme. She told Knowledge: "We had a really successful year last year, doing regular walkabouts in our areas and giving out the latest police information and warnings which are relevant to the areas students live in. We're really excited about re-establishing the scheme, so if you'd like to get involved, as a Coordinator or a volunteer please email neighbourhoodwatch@luu.leeds.ac.uk with the subject "Get me involved in Neighbourhood Watch!"
