Volunteering Opportunities
LUU recognises that volunteering can be a useful way for staff to gain more skills and experience which can support their development. There are a number of examples of staff who have incorporated volunteering into their personal development plans.
Diane Pedder, Membership Services Manager has been a trustee of Advice UK since 2006. Her role as trustee on Advice UK’s Board has enabled her to develop some key skills, including her ability to make important decisions as part of a team. She also understands a lot more about what’s involved in running a not-for-profit organisation and the types of decisions that are made at a Board meeting. Di’s meetings are held in London, which also means she meets lots of new people from organisations similar to LUU. This networking opportunity provides her with valuable links to other organisations, which in turn benefits LUU.
The Volunteering and Community office be led by Rose Hampton and she can advise you on volunteering opportunities which may be available to you and the community projects that we work on at LUU, including Green Streets & Leave Leeds Tidy, the Community Rep scheme and the Residents’ Committee project.
Another example is the Bardon Grange project. The Bardon Grange Allotment project was launched in January 2009 for students, staff and members of the local community to gain experience in growing their own food organically.
They are always looking for new volunteers so just get in touch if you’d like to help out. The Bardon Grange project offers a lot of fun and is also brilliant exercise!
If you would like more information contact Lizzie Fellows at bardongrangeproject@leeds.ac.uk or check out the Facebook group: ‘The Bardon Grange Project’.
The project takes place on Wednesdays from 3.00pm. The group meet outside the Union building at 3.00pm. Additionally, they have a Saturday session once a month – ask the volunteering and community office for information on the dates of sessions coming up.
