Your Questions

I haven't recieved my student funding - who do I need to contact?

If you are a new student and there is a delay in your student loan and funding, then contact Student Finance England on 0845 300 50 90; for NHS Bursaries you can call 0845 358 6655. If you are a continuing student encountering problems, then you will need to call your Local Education Authority. You can find their contact details at www.studentfinance.direct.gov.uk. Contact the Student Advice Centre if you require more help!

What can I do if I am having problems with my course?

If you are having problems settling into your course, then you should go and talk to your personal tutor, and/or your department’s student support officer. They can offer you support and discuss your options. If you feel you would like to consider changing course, then contact the admissions contact for the department who run the course you would like to study for more information. If you require further or more detailed advice, contact the Student Advice Centre.

What do I need to do about Council Tax?

If you’re moving into private rented accommodation and are a full-time student, you will need to claim exemption from paying Council Tax. You should send off a Council Tax Exemption Form for your house or flat to the Council. You can download a Council Tax Exemption form from www.leeds.gov.uk.
If you’re asked by the Council to provide more information about your student status, you can arrange this from the University. Find out more from the University's Student Services Centre website at www.leeds.ac.uk/studentservicescentre. Contact the Student Advice Centre if you have any further problems.

I have just moved into a rented house but there are loads of things wrong with it - what should I do?

If you’ve moved into your accommodation and there is work that needs doing, notify your landlord/agent in writing immediately. Give them a realistic deadline to get back to you to resolve the outstanding issues. Take photos so that you have a record of any problems. Find more information in the Housing section of the webste at or contact the Student Advice Centre if you require more help!

My landlord won't give me my deposit back.

If you’re still having trouble getting your deposit back from your old landlord/letting agent then write a letter detailing when you moved out and returned the keys and asking for it to be returned within 14 days. If deductions are made that you disagree with, then challenge these in writing providing any photographic or documentary evidence that may support you. If your deposit was placed in the Tenancy Deposit Scheme they can help resolve any disputes. There is more information at www.direct.gov.uk. Contact the Student Advice Centre for more help.

I don't know how to manage my bills?

Take meter readings on the day you collect the keys. Contact your gas and electricity suppliers to give them the meter readings and ask them to put the names of all the tenants on the bill, so that you’re jointly responsible. If you don’t know who supplies your utilities:

To find out your gas supplier call the M-Number Hotline on: 0870 608 1524

To find out your electricity supplier call MPAS: 0845 330 0889

To contact Yorkshire Water call: 0845 124 2424

If you don’t do this at the start of your tenancy, you could end up being charged for services used by the previous tenants!
