Abortion Fund

Leeds University Union Abortion Fund aims to provide financial assistance for female students who require a termination but are unable to pay for that termination or who have a good reason for not having the procedure on the NHS. The Fund is open to Leeds University students who are pregnant and will shortly require a termination. It cannot take applications from students who have already had a termination. If the cost of a termination you have already had has contributed to financial difficulties please seek advice from the Student Advice Centre.

What the fund offers

The fund can offer grants or interest free loans to cover all or part of the cost of a termination. All applications are based on hardship and the success of an application will depend on the cost of the termination, your ability to pay for the termination and the availability of money in the fund.

Applications to the fund

Anyone wishing to apply to the Fund should contact the Student Advice Centre. All applications are treated in the strictest confidence. You will be made an appointment to see one of the Student Advisers. The purpose of this appointment is to assess your (and if applicable, your partners) financial situation. If you have not already arranged a termination the Student Adviser can help you do this.

The Abortion Fund group

Once the financial assessment is complete your application will be presented to the Abortion Fund Group who will make a decision. This group consists of two Executive officers and one permanent member of staff. If the Fund agrees to help we will normally pay the clinic directly.
