What LUU are working on for students.

The Student Executive Officers and LUU staff work with the University, the local community and a number of other partners to help make improvements for students.

Below is a list of meetings that the Exec officers have attended, or are due to attend, and alongside at the outcomes of this meetings i.e. what has been achieved for students!

Sociology Postgrad students now benefit from having a reading group to further their understanding of the content covered in lectures. Previously, students were struggling with fully understanding everything covered in lectures and discussion groups. PCI Postgraduates now benefit from a clean common room that they would all like to work in. Previously the common room smelt of rotting food and was unhygienic. An academic will be speaking slower in their lectures so that all students in the class have the opportunity to understand and ask questions. This will help all students in the class fully understand the content. Elliot Jebreel, Education Officer. Action submitted by the Chemistry School Rep.
Students are now using Blackboard more as academics are now putting their lecture notes up on this site They can now access their lecture notes online which will help them with their learning. Elliot Jebreel, Education Officer. Action submitted by the Medicine School Rep.
Students previously didn’t get a module handbook so the School rep raised this and now they have one. Students will know what is expected of them and what is happening on their module. Elliot Jebreel, Education Officer. Action submitted by the ICS School Rep.
A lecturer was falling behind in the academic content so the School Rep raised this at the SSF and this has been amended It will mean they will not fall behind in the content of the module and will know everything they need to before their assessments. Healthcare School Reps running a termly student drop in to help and bring students together. They will get to meet other Healthcare reps. Elliot Jebreel, Education Officer. Action submitted by the Nursing & Midwifery School Rep.
Previously Psychology was only taught on the course in large groups and the students were unhappy with this. Therefore Psychology society is now running seminars and workshops. This works like a peer mentoring system and Lecturers are volunteering to help. Students will be able to get a more in depth knowledge of their subject area. Elliot Jebreel, Education Officer. Published first School Rep led newsletter and had a great response from staff and students. They will be able to find out specific news about the school of Geography and the fantastic work the School Reps are doing. Elliot Jebreel, Education Officer. Action submitted by the Geography School Rep.
Reps promoting Leeds for Life They will find out about all the fantastic opportunities Leeds for life can give them. Elliot Jebreel, Education Officer. Action submitted by the Geography School Rep.
Student’s deadlines were previously bunched together, the School rep raised this issue in the Student Staff forum and now the School is de-bunching the deadlines. Students will benefit from being able to dedicate time to each assignment instead of having to rush each one. Elliot Jebreel, Education Officer. Action submitted by the Geography School Rep.
Students needed to spend a lot of money printing plagiarism sheets these are now available electronically. The sheets will probably be more accessible to more students and will save them money on printing costs as they will be able to access them everywhere. Elliot Jebreel, Education Officer. There was an issue over the fact students needed to hand their work in electronically, which could mean they missed the deadline because of long queues into the School office. Previously not that many guest speakers attended the school therefore School reps and society are arranging for them to attend and promoting them more to students. Previously some students were receiving feedback with the wrong name on, this has now been corrected and they are receiving the correct information. Following student complaints a module has been vastly improved The module has been improved therefore their learning experience will be better. Elliot Jebreel, Education Officer. Action submitted by the Maths School Rep.
Studios were not open in the evenings. Through SSF students now have had them opened till 8pm weekdays meaning 15 extra hours per week. Students can now access this space for longer which will benefit their work. Elliot Jebreel, Education Officer. Action submitted by the Design School Rep.
Previously the reps could not use the VLE to engage their student cohort. This has been changed so that they have their own section which is useful. Students can be kept up to date with changes and what the School Reps are up to. Elliot Jebreel, Education Officer. Action submitted by the PCI School Rep.
Previously self directed time modules were not attendance monitored which meant that many students didn’t them, which affected the students who did. Now attendance is monitored and students have reported getting more out of the course. Students are getting more out of the course as more students are taking part in these sessions. Priously there was a few small Society’s for this cohort who were all doing the same thing, therefore from requests from students the School Reps helped to merge these societies into one. The society is now more efficient and students aren’t confused over which one to join. Elliot Jebreel, Education Officer. Action submitted by the History of Arts and Museum Studies School Rep.
Previously Modules were over booked so the School rep has managed to get them running twice a year so more students can study the module they’re interested in. Reading weeks across the European Languages School were not the same. Therefore the School rep raised this at Student Staff forum and this has now been standardised. Students are currently worried about cuts so the School Reps gave them all the information and are keeping them up to date. They will not be as worried about their course and know that the Union are doing something about it. Elliot Jebreel, Education Officer. Action submitted by the History School Rep.
Students requested they would like model answers to assessments, unfortunately they are not able to do this however students did get an explanation to why they couldn’t receive these It has opened up communication between students and staff and they know they will get answers to the questions they ask. Students unhappy about 2nd year structure. Therefore Students were involved in changing the 2nd year structure after success with the 3rd year structure Students have benefited from changing their Course and been involved in the process. A referendum takes place if a consensus is not reached, on your idea, at the Better Forums. Students will then get to vote 'Yes' or 'No' to your idea. Find out more about proposing ideas and voting in referendum.
