Are you a budding gardener but just not quite sure where to start? Have you been having ago over the last few years but want some more info and guidance? This will be the first of two workshops to help you grow your own food, using organic methods.
This workshop (1) will cover the basics of seeds sowing, compost, watering, where and when to plant things and how to look after plants for a successful and bountiful harvest whatever space you have to grow in! It will include some theory and some practical bits, including a tour around the garden at Bardon Grange and examples of what we're growing and how. You'll do some seed sowing and take some pots home to grow in your windowsill, yard or garden. This workshop is aimed at beginners or people who want a bit of guidance on the basics of food growing to help them improve their harvests, and will cover herbs, salad and common veg, as well as deal with your queries and build your confidence to get growing this season.
Workshop 2 will cover the next steps in food growing, with more detail on a wider range of veg and how to grow them, and will also cover the basics of growing common fruit. It will build your confidence in gardening and food growing techniques and practice, and will focus on the tasks and demands of this peak time in the growing season and give you more top tips on where and when to sow/plant things, and how to care for the plants over their lifetime, as well as deal with your queries. You will get to take home a plant of your choice from our selection of seedlings growing at Bardon.
This workshop is organised by the Bardon Grange Project, which is a community food growing project that helps students, staff, and other members of the local community grow organic food. Our main site is an old walled garden at Bardon Grange (within the grounds of Oxley halls of residence) in North West Leeds that is owned by Leeds University, where people can come along to learn, practice and enjoy growing good food with other people from the local community.
These workshops will be led by Caroline Scott, an experienced Leeds gardener and allotmenteer who does work in schools, private gardens, and works part-time for LUU as our Bardon Grange Project Grower.
There will be a range of veg, herbs, salad and fruit plants available to buy at both workshops.
Booking is essential (places limited). Please note that the workshops are stand alone and you can book on to just one or both of them (a discount is given if both are booked).
