This is the second year RAG is running the Honduras project. You’ll spend a month working with the charity Football Action, whose main aim is to encourage children into education through the universal language of football.
Whilst out there Football Action will be supporting a Honduran based charity called Casa Alianza. The Honduras project has the potential to be RAG’s most flexible and interesting project, and the volunteers who go on it this year will truly feel that the trip can be tailored just for them. You’ll get the opportunity to spend time not only on the coast, but in the capital and rural areas of Honduras.
Casa Alianza work with street children in Honduras creating opportunities for them and helping them to overcome issues like abuse, drugs, and homelessness. The project will also include the regeneration of a playing field and delivering a sports education programme to as many as 400 children! In addition to this, the project will require you to work with local teachers, helpers and coaches to educate them in how they can use sport, in particular football, to aid the children in overcoming these issues and helping them get into education.
This project isn’t just about playing football, it wants to encourage a holistic learning through football; team building, personal skills, and most importantly developing a sense of well-being and how to live a healthy lifestyle are to name a few. Volunteers can be expected to provide a mix of coaching and teaching for the children, as well as provide support, council, and guidance for the children. The project is available for all Leeds students as training will be given, and of course, fun will be had!
