Introduction

The Leeds University Rugby Programme offers a unique opportunity for students to experience almost professional rugby structures whilst studying at one of the best universities in the country.

The Club

Club Moto: Marching on Together “proficiscor in una”.

As a club we have 5 teams who play in the BUCS league every week and have over 130 players registered. Last year, our 1st XV gained their highest ever position in the premier north league, the 2nd XV maintained their position in their league and the 3rd, 4th and 5th XV were promoted. Over the years the club has developed player development relationships with Leeds Carnegie, Doncaster Knights, Otley, Ilkley, Yorkshire and England. These links make it possible for players to combine a first class education with a route to professional rugby.

University rugby at Leeds offers a fun but highly professional environment to continue your rugby at whatever level suits you. We have team training twice per week, individual/unit sessions once per week and strength and condition sessions three times per week.

Our coaching staff have a wealth of experience and the links in professional rugby to convert your potential in to a professional rugby career. Head Performance Coach, Hugh Gumbs draws upon his own playing experiences representing England Rugby League and Bradford Bulls. Hugh dedicated long coaching hours to the club to maintain the high standards all members strive for. Two Leeds graduates complete our coaching team with Andrew Boyde, professional athlete at Doncaster Knights in the RFU Championship and Michael Cachia who was twice awarded a coaching scholarship during his time at the University as a student.

Every year, all five teams compete against Leeds Metropolitan University in varsity fixtures. The 1st XV have the honour of rounding off the day of sport by playing at Headingley stadium in front of a crowd of over 15,000 people. The game is the sporting highlight of the year for the whole university and an historic win in the 2011 Varsity match ensures that this will continue to be true.

Mission

The Leeds University Rugby Club’s mission is to offer students the opportunity to play rugby at the level which they aspire to. To ensure they are properly coached and managed so that they can do so in a safe environment. Their self-respect and taking part to be as important as being successful.

University of Leeds rugby caters for players of all abilities, so you will always be able to find a team to accommodate your skill level. Throughout the whole club, everyone is treated as a team mate, so should you feel you need improvement in a certain area of your game, there will always be someone happy to help you develop yourself, whether it be in the gym or outside on the rugby pitch.

Scholarships

The Leeds University Rugby Scholarships are designed to support the needs of performance athletes during their time studying at the University of Leeds. This aim will be achieved by providing technical and financial support. Providing practical solutions and services to students who have the talent and commitment will ultimately enable them to fulfil their potential within their chosen sport and their academic ventures.

Players

We currently have club, county and international players in our squads. Pierce Phillips and William Magie are both international players having played for England Students and USA U20s respectively and are training with Leeds Carnegie. Tomas Francis and James Munro are both players at Doncaster Knights.

Players will be required to play for Leeds Carnegie A league, and U19 if requested.
