About Us

UPDATE (15/9/11):

We will be at Freshers' Fair in the EDGE Sports Hall on Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 21st. Come down and meet the committee, have a chat about the club and sign up for team trials. Trials will be held in the Gryphon Sports Centre on Saturday 24th from 12pm, and callbacks will be on Sunday 25th September from 12pm.

Alternatively feel free to attend our first Club Session on Wednesday 28th September from 12-2pm in the EDGE Hall 1B. You don't need a sports membership to attend this session, as the gym will allow all students access to sports clubs until the 8th October. We will also have spare rackets for the first few sessions, so if you don't have one yet don't worry!

About Us
Hello and welcome to the Badminton Club at The University of Leeds. We are a vibrant, friendly and social club and as such we welcome players of all standards, including those completely new to the game.

New Members
A warm welcome to all of the freshers starting in September 2011. If you are staying in University accommodation you will receive free Club membership to The EDGE (the main University sports centre on campus). This allows you free access to the gym and sports halls, which makes coming along to badminton in your first year a doddle.
For those returning to Leeds you will require some sort of EDGE membership to access the sports halls (these start at £72 for a Sports Pass membership). You can find out about membership at the EDGE here:
http://sport.leeds.ac.uk/page.asp?section=94&sectionTitle=Students
As with most sports societies there is an annual club membership; we charge £35. This money is used in a number of ways to provide the club with all the shuttles, coaching, transport, tournament costs and socials for the year. As a club member you have access to 5 hours of courts every week during our popular club sessions (see below for times etc.).

Teams
As well as being a highly social club, our teams also compete in a number of leagues including the inter-university BUCS league as well as the Leeds and District local league.
We have 9 teams playing matches throughout the year. These provide a fantastic opportunity for lots of players to get involved in playing competitively. Our teams are:
Men’s BUCS 1st              Men’s League 1st
Men’s BUCS 2nd            Women’s League 1st
Men’s BUCS 3rd             Mixed League A
Women’s BUCS 1st        Mixed League B
Women’s BUCS 2nd

We are very excited to announce the forming of an entirely new team for the year 2011/12, the Women’s 2nd BUCS team. This is a fantastic opportunity for more female players to play competitively and represent their University.

Club Sessions, Training and Match Times
Our club sessions run twice a week, and are held on Sundays from 11:30-14:30 in Sports Hall 2 and on Wednesdays 12:00-14:00 in Sports Hall 1. The sessions are open to everybody - those who enjoy the social side of badminton as well as those who are looking for competitive games to improve.
For our team players we offer professional coaching once a week on Monday nights from 20:00-22:00. Due to the limited space, these sessions are offered to Men’s BUCS 1st and 2nd and Women’s BUCS 1st squads.
We play all of our BUCS matches on Wednesday afternoons between 14:00-16:00. These are regularly played at Home straight after our Wednesday club sessions and will be advertised in advance on our Facebook page. Everyone is encouraged to stay on after Wednesday club sessions to cheer on our teams.
League matches are played on Thursday evenings in Sports Hall 2 (when at home).

Socials
Regular socials are an important aspect of this club and we enjoy a wide variety of events, venues and nights out throughout the year. Our Facebook page will be updated regularly with news and information about up-coming socials and events, so keep your eyes peeled!
