Socialist Students

About Us

Is socialism possible in the 21st century?

Yes. But more than this, it's necessary.

Life today for the vast majority of the world's population is hard. Half of the world survives on less than $2 a day. In Britain conditions are better due to the victories of workers' struggles of the past, but even here our generation faces attacks on education, joblessness, and a growing gap between the rich and poor.

Many of us are looking for an alternative to capitalism; a system run in interests of the few which promises further economic and environmental catastrophe, but we are presented with a false choice between the lies and empty promises offered by politicians of today, and the long shadow cast by the oppressive Soviet Union.

Democratic socialism is now more important than ever, and it starts with us.  Socialist Students is a national organisation; we aim for our members to understand and politically engage with the situation in the wake of the 2008 world financial crisis and earliest symptoms of climate change.

The economy is too important to be left to the whim of unscrupulous big business, sleazy politicians, and the anarchy of the free market; it should be under the control of regular people.

The fight for socialism is a fight for democracy - economic and political.

Socialist Students is involved nationally with 'Youth Fight For Jobs' and the 'Campaign To Defeat Fees' and has members in over fifty colleges and universities.

We meet every Friday between 5pm and 6pm in room 4.20 in the Parkinson Building.
