Student Action for Refugees (STAR)

About Us

2011 Winner of the Riley's - Best Collaboration

Student Action for Refugees (STAR) is a national network of student groups that campaign for and volunteer with Refugees and Asylum Seekers.  See first-hand the human reality of seeking asylum, and work with some fascinating people to make an impact on the community in Leeds.

To all prospectice and current members of STAR,

Firstly I want to say that this is a society that does something. Being a member of STAR society you'll find out a lot about the asylum system in the UK, the experience of those who arrive and seek sanctuary in the UK, and most importantly you'll meet the people who are labelled Asylum Seekers and Refugees. They are a diverse range of people and it has been an eye-opening experience to meet some of them, as well as those who work as volunteers to support them. Many of our members have said they appreciate working with STAR as a chance to get outside of the bubble of student life and make an impact in the community. I have personally enjoyed being a volunteer and member of STAR and undoubtedly it is one of the best parts of my University experience. For more details on what you can do as a member of STAR, please see below. I hope it is something you will want to be involved in. Yours sincerely, Fran Roberts Co-ordinator of STAR society 2011-12.
