Liberal Democrats — Working For You!

Do you believe our society should be fair, free and open?

Do you value liberty, equality and community?

Do you agree that no-one should be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity?

If your answer to the above questions is a resounding "YES!", then Liberal Youth is the political society for you. We are the youth wing of the Liberal Democrats and actively campaign about several issues related to liberalism and social democracy. In the past we have:

  • Participated in student protests regarding rises in tuition fees and cuts to the higher education budget.
  • Been involved in the campaign for Fairer Votes during the Alternative Vote referendum.
  • Organised a large campaign on campus during the 2010 general election.
  • Run political training workshops for individuals interested in careers in politics.

And on campus, we work with the Union Executive, other societies, and the student population to ensure a better learning experience during your time at university. In the past, these include:

  • Pushed for better step-free access for disabled students on campus, including better signposting, longer opening hours for the Red Route (Better Uni, Nov. 2011).
  • Proposed and supported longer opening hours and 24-hour access for libraries on campus, especially immediately prior to exams. (Referendum, Dec. 2011)

What's more, despite all this serious political activity, we are always keen to emphasise the social element of our society; we offer many opportunities for people of similar socio-political views to hang out and have fun together, such as Otley runs, karaoke evenings and dinner parties. Moreover, despite our differences, we always try to maintain good relations with Leeds Labour Students and Leeds Conservative Future by organising several “cross-party” events involving all three societies.

Leeds Liberal Youth is open to all students attending higher education institutions in Leeds as well as all other local young people under the age of 26 (and if you are a paid-up member of the Liberal Democrats, then you are automatically a member of Liberal Youth!)
