Welcome to LUUMS – the Leeds University Union Music Society – one of the biggest societies in the LUU. We have a history spanning back over 80 years, and have something to offer you regardless of your musical ability or subject of study. There are eight ensembles for you to be involved with, a large committee that you can become part of from Easter next year, and some fantastic social events.
Each of the eight ensembles performs at least two concerts across the year. There is also a chamber music competition, two informal concerts, and a charity concert in Leeds Town Hall. There are four auditioned ensembles: Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Chamber Choir and Symphonic Wind Band. The four open ensembles are Sinfonia Orchestra, LUUMS Open Chorus, Wind Band, and Brass Band. A priority for the society is to provide a friendly environment for all members to enjoy themselves whilst building on their musical skills. Another priority is to make sure that everyone has an opportunity to perform in LUUMS; no matter what your degree is, nor what level of performance you have reached in the past, we guarantee there to be a place for you.
As well as a diverse array of musical opportunities, LUUMS also has an exciting social calendar. Rehearsals are typically followed by a trip to the pub, and there will be a calendar of organized social events. Probably the biggest social highlight will be the LUUMS Ball, which in the past few years has been hosted at venues includinThe Hilton Hotel, and The Royal Armouries Museum. This usually falls at the end of January.
Our education project also has a wide range of activities throughout the year. This gives our musicians the chance to learn about new kinds of music whilst getting experience working with children. This project will be highlighted with an appearance at our charity concert in Town Hall.
We have a fantastic committee who are all raring to give LUUMS their all this year, and I’m sure that 2011-12 will be another fantastic year for this brilliant society!
