A Cappella

About Us

Taking inspiration from the best music and performance from the last century, ‘a cappella’ (without any instrumental accompaniment) gives lively and diverse shows throughout the year. While we usually include some pieces consisting of pure harmonised singing, most of the music is contemporary and so uses vocal percussion and new singing techniques which are not often seen in a traditional choir.

In the past we have performed at various balls and dinners, including the British Heart Foundation ball, various Union events, the Riley Smith and JCR Awards, in collaboration with other Union societies (for example, with TG in one of their outstanding plays!), as well as performing occasional parties and weddings. This year we plan to enter VFUK (Voice Festival UK), the British national a cappella championships, which is great way to watch a cappella from universities up and down the country as well as helping us to reach a high standard ourselves by competing against some of the most talented groups in the country.

This year we are very excited to have two musical directors and an enthusiastic committee, but we also encourage all group members who want to arrange and teach or even to just suggest pieces to do just that!

This year's auditions have already finished, and our fantastic group for this year has been finalised. We're really looking forward to making some great music with them this year! We're sorry if you auditioned this year and you didn't make it, or if you wanted to audition but missed them; we will be holding ‘Give It A Go’ sessions later in the year for anyone who wants to try it out and see what we do!

Membership is £8 for the year, and only successfully auditioned members are eligible to pay.
