Horse Riding

About Us

2011 Winner of the Riley's - Most Improved

We are the Leeds University Horse Riding Club, catering for both casual and competitive riders from total beginners to advanced levels. We run group riding lessons, hacks, friendly competitions, social events and also compete three teams in the British Universities Sports Association league.

THE BASICS

Membership for the year is £30, or £25 during Freshers Week. If you join in semester 2 the membership price is £20. This includes your insurance, access to boot and hat hire, access to club comps (from novice to team level) and access to our socials. Lessons range from £10 - £15 per hour for a group lesson of up to 5 people, which is really reasonably priced we think! Private lessons can also be arranged. Lessons currently take place on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Club competitions such as gymkhanas and showjumping take place termly and hacking is available during the spring and summer terms.

WHERE DO WE RIDE?
http://www.wilsdenequestrian.co.uk/ - approx 40mins drive from Leeds city centre and easily accessible by train and taxi. Riders are grouped according to ability and a driver is usually included in this group to aid transport. Where a car is not available, public transport instructions are provided in your lesson confirmation.

HOW DO I JOIN?
Online here or in person on Tuesdays from 7pm-8.30pm at the Original Oak pub, Headingley.

HOW DO I SIGN UP FOR LESSONS?
Once you have joined, you will be added to the lesson organiser's mailing list. She sends out a sign up sheet detailing days and times available every week. You must reply to this email stating your name, ability, whether or not you drive and what day/time you prefer to be allocated a lesson space. Please note, lesson times are assigned on a first come first served basis so please check your email regularly to ensure you get the time you prefer. This sign up email is sent two weeks in advance. Once you have a reply to say you are confirmed for a lesson time, you must attend the Original Oak pub in Headingley the following Tuesday to pay for your lesson (approx 1 week in advance depending on what day you've been allocated). We are currently working on making it possible to pay for lessons in the Union so watch this space! Although this sounds complicated, the system works well once everyone has settled in.

WHAT ABOUT TEAMS?
Our 2010 - 2011 teams have done fantastically with the A and B teams getting through to Regionals and the B team ultimately winning Nationals! Teams for 2011-2012 will be selected in late September/early October. Join the society in Freshers week and look out for emails about the trials. Good luck to everyone who is considering taking part!

WHAT ELSE CAN I DO?
We offer termly inter-club competitions such as gymkhanas, timed top score jumping and dressage, for all levels and abilities. Rosettes are offered for 1st-6th places and food and drink is provided. You must be a member of the club to enter - watch your emails for more information!

WHAT ABOUT THE SOCIALS?
We meet every Tuesday at the Original Oak, Headingley 7pm-8:30pm so come along for a drink, pay for your lesson and meet the committee! We also organise a number of socials throughout the year for all club members. We also want to hear what you want from us - fancy bowling and pizza? Or a big Sunday lunch after your lesson? Let us know your suggestions for getting together as a club.
