What is Jiu-Jitsu?

Jiu-Jitsu is a self defence based martial art that uses a system of throwing, locking and striking based on traditional forms from medieval Japan. Using the principle of using the aggressor's energy against them, Jiu-Jitsu can be used by men, women and children to counter any agressive situation.

We are part of The Jitsu Foundation which is an organisation with over a hundred clubs, 3000 active members and several hundred instructors in the UK alone. The Jitsu Foundation is also the largest single-style Jiu-Jitsu organisation in Britain.

Why learn Jiu-Jitsu?

Jiu-Jitsu is a progressice martial art that helps develop not just skills in self defence but also your strength, fitness and posture. Over time people find that Jiu-Jitsu helps to improve self-esteem and self-confidence. It is also a great way to have fun and meet new friends.

LUU Jiu-Jitsu club has a vibrant social life with events throughout the year. There is also the opportunity to attend regional, national and international courses and competitions. At the 2011 Nationals we won two medals, one silver and one bronze and came fourth in the BUCS competition! Go Leeds!

Beginners are always welcome

The best way to find out about Jiu-Jitsu is to come along to one of our sessions. Starting a martial art may be daunting but even our instructors were beginners once so at the the club we provide a friendly, relaxed atmosphere where members can progress at their own pace.

All you need to start is loose clothing and a willingness to learn. Bring along a friend too if you like and remember that your first session is completely free. Next Give It A Go session is Sunday 29th January, 1430-1630 in Studio 2, The Edge, Leeds University.
