Comics & Graphic Novels
The Comic Soc is a friendly and enthusiastic group of individuals united by an appreciation of sequential and narrative art. This is your chance to meet and collaborate with amateurs and professionals in the medium, and take part in our numerous social activities and discover exciting new titles in our huge shared library. Plus, enjoy the added bonus of fantastic discounts from our good friends at the Travelling Man and Forbidden Planet comic stores. Drop us a line and say hi, or simply come along to one of our numerous pub socials down at the Fab Cafe.
We welcome all those interested, whether you've been reading comic books for years or have never picked one up. Our members have ever-growing personal libraries of books that are frequently borrowed so you can try out some titles without having to pay!
Since we started in 2009 Comic Soc has gone from strength to strength. We've enjoyed film screenings of Watchmen, Iron Man 2 and this passing year the likes of Thor, X-Men and Captain America along with monthly drawing sessions hosted by the good folks at OK Comics. The annual Thought Bubble convention is always a highlight, bringing a whole weekend of events and we'll keep you up to date with smaller fairs and sales going on around the town. We've also teamed up with the Sci Fi and Anime societies to bring a giant-sized Geek Off quiz which is bound to return with a bang. This year we hope to hold even more joint-society socials whilst keeping our bi-weekly meetups and towards the summer we've got The Amazing Spiderman, The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises to look forward too, along with our regular end of year blowout.
We also have a podcast produced by former president, James Story, featuring various members sharing their knowledge and love for pretty much every comic you can think of! New episodes will be posted on our Facebook page, but you can also find them over on podbean or subscribe to the podcast on iTunes.
- How much it is to join?
A small £2 donation to the treasury.
- What that fee gets you:
Membership fees go towards funding group activities and procuring resources. Ours is not a cost-intensive society, so we aim to get the most widespread return for our investments. Also a 10% discount at Travelling Man and Forbidden Planet comic stores in the city centre. It also allows you access to our extensive library that can act as a great jumping off point for many characters that you may not have read before.
- Regular social / meeting information:
We regularly meet for light-hearted discussion and socialising at Fab Cafe in the city centre, just a quick walk from the University. We also regularly host film screenings in the union featuring comic book films and classic cartoons. All events are posted on our Facebook page beforehand so why not join us, drop by and introduce yourself?
