The Leeds University Malaysian and Singaporean Society (MASSOC) is a society that was formed in 1984 with the purpose of helping Malaysian and Singaporean students cope with the challenges of living abroad. As the cultures and lifestyles of Malaysia and Singapore greatly differ from those of the UK, students from these countries who have just started embarking on a new chapter of their education in the University of Leeds tend to have difficulty adapting to the conditions of their new environment. We want the transition from East to West to be as smooth as possible, so that they can start enjoying themselves in Leeds, as well as adhering to their core duties of being up to date on coursework and keeping their grades in check.

We are a place where Malaysian and Singaporean students, be it first year or final year, can come together and mingle whilst participating in the various events and activities organised. It is our sincerest wish that through these get-togethers, new friendships that last forever are formed, especially when they go back home. In this way, we are all able to build on our current network of friends. As a group, we support one another in times of need, and celebrate with one another in times of joy.

In MASSOC, we place emphasis on the norms that make Malaysia and Singapore truly unique among other countries. These norms are what make them so special in our hearts. We know that wherever we may be, we will always long for a sense of familiarity, a ‘comfort zone’ where we can always fall back on when need be. As the saying goes, “home is where the heart is”. That is why we strive to be as Malaysian/Singaporean as possible, to create a mini Malaysia/Singapore right here in Leeds.
