What is the Ahlul Bayt Society?
The ABSoc has been set up with the aim of propagating the light of Islam, The Holy Quran, the Prophet of Islam and his holy progeny.
What is our vision?
We seek to use university platforms to create dialogue and to exchange ideas, freely and objectively. We aim to provide our members and the wider community with a framework for understanding Islam and its philosophy which encompasses every aspect of our lives from sociology, politics and economics, to ecology, psychology and spirituality.
Our aims and objectives:
1. To strive to fulfil the spiritual, emotional, social and
academic needs of our members.
2. To create opportunities to allow us to educate
ourselves, our members and the wider community
on the teachings of the Holy Prophet(SAWS)
and his Ahlul Bayt(AS).
3. To raise awareness of the beliefs and
practices of the Ahlul Bayt(AS).
4. To create a platform for dialogue and
debate between societies.
5. To continually provide information
about events of relevance.
FAQ
What is Islam?
Islam means submission to the will of God, The Independent, Absolute Being who is the Creator of all things. This profound belief is founded on one choice and intellect. Islam is, therefore, an active process whereby a Muslim constantly strives to perfect their moral conduct, increase their knowledge and develop their character.
“I was only sent to perfect good moral character.” The Holy Prophet (SAWS)
Thus, it provides many with a holistic vision of the social, spiritual and practical aspects of life, based on faith through reason and a framework that seeks to respect all.
Who are the Ahlul Bayt?
‘Ahlul Bayt’ is an Arabic term which refers to the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad(SAWS) and his family. In Islamic thought and jurisprudence, the Ahlul Bayt(AS) occupy a prominent position known as the Ja’afari school of thought. Their followers are commonly known as ‘Shia Muslims’. The word Shia is found in the Quran and in Hadith, and literally means follower.
Why the Ahlul Bayt?
"I leave among you two precious things; if you hold onto them, you will not go astray after me: the Book of God (Holy Quran), which is like a rope extended between the heaven and the Earth, and my Household (Ahlul Bayt). These two things will not separate from each other until they reach me near the fountain on the Day of Judgement. Be alert and careful how you treat them after me.”
Sahih Muslim (Vol.8, p.25, no.2408)
The above tradition of the Prophet Muhammad(SAWS) emphasises the importance of the Ahlul Bayt(AS), as well as the Holy Quran, in maintaining the true essence of his message. They are both the ultimate sources of guidance for all those who strive for submission to God in the way of Islam. Thus they remain revered by Muslim all over the world.
How does the ABSoc differ to other Islamic Societies?
The Ahlul Bayt Society seeks to complement and work alongside other Islamic organisations both inside and out of university. It focuses on the role of the Ahlul Bayt (AS) both within Islamic thought and wider fields of society. The ABSoc promotes the understanding of these great figures and the universal ideals they propagated to all members of society.
