Atheist

About Us

LUU Atheist Society is THE largest free-thought student organisation in the UK and are committed to providing a forum for secular discussion and rationalist thinking. We represent and fuel a jam packed life for non-religious students at the University. We are undoubtedly the most active student atheist society in the country, holding at least four events a week during term time, ranging from a course evenings to the weekly social. We are also very active Nationally. Leeds was a founding member of The National Federation of Atheist, Humanist and Secularist students (AHS), which provides support to societies across the country.

Weekly meetings are held on Tuesday (7pm location tbc).  This our main atheist night we have a diverse range events! We have talks given by experts on Atheism, Science, secularism and Skepticism. We also do film and documentary showings, formal debates, charity fundraisers, interfaith events to name a few!  Meetings are followed by the weekly social. We go to a range of bars and pubs, from campus bases such as the Old Bar and the Terrace, to our favourites place in town, Vodka Revolution and Fab Café. The society also has a guilty pleasure in Karaoke and we often visit D-Fusion where the quality of the cocktails combats that of our singing!

Course nights are on Friday (7pm Location TBC). We currently run four courses over the year. One Life is a course that asks the ‘big questions’ but approaches them from a secular perspective. Impure is a discussion of the morality and ethics surrounding sex and relationships. Perspective  Is for anyone who has an interest in religion, it aims to encourage dialogue between faith and non-faith communities.  Each week a speaker from a different religion is invited down to tell us about their beliefs and answer any questions you may have. Answers is here to help atheists defend their position and explain why they don’t believe.

We host a variety of special events. We have our annual celebrations such as The Winter Solstice meal, Darwin Day, The Galileo Day Feast and our End of Year Ball. These are always great fun and a chance to suit up!
Reason Week is our flagship event of the year! We are on campus all week holding talks, formal debates and open discussions on atheism, reason and science. Leeds pioneered these awareness weeks and now societies all over the country hold similar events. One of the highlights of every year is our weekend away. This year we have decided to go north of the border and visit Edinburgh!  We will be arranging travel and accommodation for a bargain price, as well as a full itinerary of things to do! We will be visiting some of the many tourist attractions in the city by day and by night, of course, we will be hitting the bars and clubs

So if your interested in Secular discussion, why people hold religious beliefs, rational thinking or any of the other things we do sign up now or come and speak to us at one of our events.
