Leeds University Philosophical Society
2011-12

Welcome!

Leeds University Philosophical Society is a departmental society aiming to get students from all disciplines together to discuss philosophical issues. To do this we have a full programme of events, the outline of which is below.  All our events are intended help students enjoy their time at Leeds, whether that means opening up to new areas of philosophical study, developing their academic ability through discussion and debate, or making friends with people on the same course. Our primary concern as a society is enhancing both the academic and social experience of students studying at Leeds.

To get in touch, join the society, and find out the details for coming events, visit our Facebook page by searching for 'LU Philosophical Society', or click on this link:

Events Outline

--- Weekly social and lecture series ---
Each week we hold a social to meet, drink, and discuss philosophy. This year we are running a lecture series on the History of Ideas, aiming to chart the development of Western philosophy. We will be putting on talks which will explore the development of western philosophy, from the Pre-Socratics, through the Renaissance, to the post-Kantian split between continental and analytic philosophy. There will be a short lecture exploring the philosophy of a particular thinker or philosophical movement, examining what they contributed to the development philosophy. This talk will be given by a lecturer from either our department or from visiting universities, and will be followed by a discussion.

--- Philosophy in Context ---
This year, we will be starting a new programme called “Philosophy in context”, which will primarily function as platform for engaging with philosophy in different and diverse arenas. We will be looking at theatre, poetry, art, literature, science, etc. We hope to engender an understanding of philosophy as something that is not solely confined to academic study, but as a force which is influential in every aspect of our culture.

--- Logic Workshop ---
Last year our first year Logic Workshops were very successful. We offer small-group mentoring to supplement the lectures and tutorials of the compulsory philosophy module PHIL1008 Introduction to Logic. These sessions are open to all students who feel like they would benefit from a bit more practice in this topic

Where and when: Day, time and room TBC by the beginning of semester 2.

--- Summer Retreat ---
Following the great success of our summer retreat last year we will again be organising a trip to Dalehead in the Lake District for a week of talks, discussion, walks, relaxation, and perhaps a little bit of post-exam partying…

Where and when: The Lake District, date TBC

--- Give it a Go ---
For anyone who wants to get involved but isn’t yet sure that LUPS is for them, we will be holding a Give it a Go session at the beginning of semester 1. The idea is to introduce people to what it is that we do in our society. Exact details of what we’ll be getting up to will be on the Facebook page before the event.

--- Philosophy Film Club ---
Here we hope to provide an opportunity to chill out whilst watching films with your friends. The films will be decided on together and can range from the most post modernist art house films to the problem of personal identity raised by Schwarzenegger’s The 6th Day.

--- Special advanced lectures---
Aimed more at 2nd and 3rd years, or anyone with a more advanced knowledge of philosophy, we will be organising some special events each semester looking at the most contemporary arguments in the fields of metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of language and philosophy of mind.
