East Asian Research

About Us

Hi there!

Welcome to the Department of East Asian Studies at the University of Leeds. As students ourselves, we understand how daunting university life can be, especially when you first begin, so to ease you into it we would like to introduce to you the East Asian Research Society, or EARS.

EARS is a student-run, departmental society which organises academic activities such as talks, conferences and educational trips. Since 1989, EARS has represented the members of the Department of East Asian Studies and all students with an interest in East Asia. It aims to raise awareness of and stimulate debate about the current issues in East Asia and also serves as an important forum that fosters discussion, long lasting friendships and a mutual understanding between students of East Asian Studies and students from the region. Not only does EARS deal with academic activities, we also organise social events where you will have the chance to meet new and like-minded people with an interest in East Asia, chill out and have a great time.

We have many activities planned for the forthcoming academic year. During the year we link up with other societies to host huge events such as the legendary Halloween party, and the East Asian ball. Along with these big events, we have weekly pub socials (Beers with EARS) on Tuesday nights at Strawbs, and various nights out. We will also be continuing our weekly social afternoon tea with EARS, held every Wednesday 1-3pm in the department foyer. Keep your EARS peeled in Freshers Week for upcoming events!

We also set up cultural events throughout the year. We plan to host a number of East Asian film nights, as well as cooking classes. On the academic side of things, we can help students of the East Asian Studies department to find Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Cantonese language partners. Our annual language partner speed-dating event is always popular and we also have plans to set up a Chinese corner for students of Chinese and Chinese international students to practise their language skills together.

As well as our busy social calendar, EARS is planning to host a football and netball team, as well as weekly badminton and squash sessions. Each team has one weekly training session and one match, where the teams play against various societies within Leeds University Union. Please feel free to come along to one of our training sessions beginning the first week of term.

Intro Week will give you a chance to meet us, the committee, and see what the society has to offer. We will have an EARS stall at the Freshers Fair, so come along, sign up and find out about events in the first few weeks.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Don't miss out on a jam-packed year of varied social and educational events. We're planning something for everyone. It's your society, so come along and get involved.
