Chemistry
About Us
We are ChemSoc, the society run by chemistry students! Coming to university is very exciting but it can be difficult to meet people in a purely academic environment. We organise socials and events so you can meet course mates and like-minded people in a relaxed environment!
The Society's objectives are:
-
Increase employability prospects for students
-
Encourage networking amongst students, the department and employers
-
Listen to what YOU want and have to say – it is your society!
Socials
We will be running regular socials throughout the year including nights out, film nights, and hopefully trips including Alton Towers and paintballing! We currently have a trip planned to Manchester's Museum of Science and Industry for a give-it-a-go (GIAG) session on November 19th.
Our social secretaries Danni and Emma are working hard to get good deals on these events so you get these at the best price. We are expecting some events to be very popular so these will be exclusive to ChemSoc members so make sure you don't miss out on a great trip!
There is a ChemSoc ball which is run at the end of the year. The ball is a black tie event which gives everyone a chance to brush off the hard work of the year, and probably the spilt chemicals from your lab sessions. It will be held at a 5 Star hotel (traditionally the Leeds Metropole Hotel) and will include a champagne reception, a 3 course meal and a form of entertainment. Last year it was a fantastic atmosphere, a night not to be missed.
Our treasurer Jack will be working on getting companies to hopefully subsidise some of these events to help out students who are running on a tight budget.
Careers
This year the Chemistry Society will be working closely with the department. Our aim is to increase employability prospects and encourage networking amongst students by holding events that invite companies to come to the department and talk to students about career choices and what they are looking for when employing graduates.
We understand that there is a huge variety of careers open to the students in the department, so if you would like to hear from a specific company, please do get in touch and we will do our best to get it sorted!
Sports
If you are interested in playing Football or Netball for ChemSoc then our sports Secretary Johnny is the man to talk to! He will be in touch during Freshers week with details about how to get involved.
Charity
During the first semester we are working along-side PsycSoc in collecting warm clothes, blankets, sleeping bags etc and distributing them to a variety of different homeless shelters, hostels and charities (such as the salvation army).
With this in mind, we ask that when you are packing to come to uni, instead of chucking out clothes you come across that you no longer wear, you bring them to Leeds with you and donate them to this cause. We will be in touch with further details when the term starts!
