German Society

About Us

German society is for all those students of German and those who just have a general interest in German and German speaking countries. We offer the chance to meet with other German enthusiasts, both from German speaking countries and our own, and to socialise in an informal environment.

To make you feel welcome and at home, we offer an extensive range of activities with something to suit everyone.
·         Our relaxed weekly event ‘Kaffee und Kuchen’ is held every Tuesday from 2-3pm in the German departmental foyer. This is where hard-working German students, German Erasmus students and German supports come to eat, drink, relax and socialise - there are free cakes, biscuits, tea and coffee!

·         Every month we run ‘Stammtisch’, a night organised by Social Secretary, Dan. This is an opportunity to have a few cheap drinks at the authentic Bierkeller, heading to a club after. This is a perfect time to meet and talk to other people in the society, socialise in a non-academic environment and have a few drinks with your friends outside of lectures!
      NEXT STAMMTISCH: TBA

·         We are also working very closely with both the French Society and the Spanish Society to form a Modern Languages Group. This gives everyone a chance to share their time at Leeds within a larger circle of people and be part of something bigger with people who also share an interest in languages. It is also beneficial for Joint Honours language students. We plan to also carry out a regular ‘Modern Languages socials’ including international film and food nights, friendly speed dating and themed Otley runs! There is also the potential to meet with other local German and language societies.

·         At Christmas we run our popular annual trip to Berlin, a chance to experience the centre of German history and culture as well as party away the weekend in one of Europe’s nightlife capitals. You can’t complain with all this for around a hundred pounds! Click here to see all about last year’s trip!

·         In addition to everything else, our Sport Secretaries Sam and Simon work hard and offer Netball and Football for both for boys and girls. (Sign up sheets for September 2011 are at the bottom of the page!Login required). With relaxed training sessions, more competitive leagues and the Sauerkraut Cup, it's a great place to meet new people and have fun! Facebook: The Deutsch Fussball Group. For more information, check out our sports page.

THIS YEAR LEEDS UNIVERSITY WILL ALSO BE HOSTING THE SAURKRAUT CUP! Look out for more information soon!

If all that wasn’t enough to convince you how great we are, the German Society is also proud to boast a prestigious Riley Award for Best Campaign following protests last year against the cut of the British Council Language Assistant scheme. With a lot of hard work the scheme managed to be saved! Our society is the only departmental society to achieve such an award, so we are keen to show it off!
Keep checking back here for the most up-to-date information on the society and events. We also have a notice board in the German department foyer, or you can find us on Facebook!
