About Us

Major Upcoming Event!

To welcome both new and old members alike to Scottish Country Dance 2010-11 we are hosting a ceilidh! There'll be a live band and caller (Black Box Band), to get us all into the swing of dancing for the new term! The event will be held in Mine on the 1st of November (Monday), open to members, prospective members and non-members alike. Bring friends! The bar will be open, and we'll be dancing from 8 till 11, so come along for a taste of the energy and fun of dancing together!

Scottish Country Dance at Leeds University Union

Scottish Country Dancing (not highland!) is a fun, traditional style of dancing which enables you to use up your energy while enjoying yourself and socialising. We are a friendly and relaxed society whose aim is to show everyone that Scottish dancing is neither dull nor just for the elderly!

Scottish dancing is as easy or as difficult as you want it to be. There are a few basic steps - travelling and setting - which you learn to begin with, and then you can begin dancing. We dance in three and four-couple sets, men facing ladies (or ladies facing ladies if we run out of men), and you can always ask to dance with somebody experienced if you need some steering in the right directions! The dances range in tempo, from strathspeys (slow and thoughtful) to jigs (bouncy and exhausting)!

Talking of increasing difficulty, as of last year we've begun an advanced dancing class! For those brave enough, this will involve advancing and perfecting routines and the opportunity to perform p

We are very fond of socialising - each session we swap partners so we end up dancing with everyone sooner or later. We also hold a number of events throughout the year. On 1st November we'll have our ceilidh - a night of fun, crazy, high speed country dancing which is quick and easy to learn. Then around Christmas we have our Christmas meal out, and our Burns night meal in. We also go to Scottish dancing evenings at venues around Leeds in order to watch and dance with some very experienced dancers. We also attend IVFDF - the Inter-Varsity Folk Dance Festival. IVFDF is a whole weekend of many different styles of dancing, including scottish, salsa, morris, pole dancing (yes really), waltzing and much more, which this year is held in Bristol!
If you fancy giving Scottish Dancing a try, meet us in the reception of the Union Building on Tuesdays at 6.30pm. You can start any week - we won't make you dance more than you are comfortable with.

Boring but important stuff
As you know, our university love health and safety so it's up to us to play our part. Obviously this is a high energy and quite often fast paced activity but there's always a risk of collision with objects or other people. Hopefully though with Alan's guidance your dancing will be well coordinated and safe!
We recommend that you bring comfortable and sensible shoes with good grip (do we even need to say "no heels"?) and a bottle of water to avoid dehydration - we'll give you plenty of breaks between dances.
