Dance Groups

Swing is a partner dance that originated in the 30s and 40s. Think World War II, big bands and vintageyness.

The society runs weekly dance classes, teaching mainly Lindy Hop, the best known and most popular swing dance. Classes are casual and relaxed and cater for all levels, from beginners to more experienced dancers. There is also the opportunity to social dance so you can practice your newly learnt skills on the dance floor. There is no need to bring a partner, as we rotate partners throughout the classes. Just wear something comfy and no heels please.

Outside of the weekly classes there are lots of other exciting things going on. We hold regular socials, both dance and non-dance related. We can usually be found in the Old Bar in the Union after classes too. We take part in the annual dance show, along with many other LUU dance societies and the society is also involved in ‘Lindy at the Light’, a charity performance event near Christmas, along with other members of the local Lindy scene (links to videos of these perfomances can be found below). We also take part in workshops, some of which are free to members of Swing Soc. We attend several dance camps across the country too, as well as our very own ‘Future Sounds of Swing’ in Leeds, meaning that there will be the opportunity to be taught by, and dance with, some of the world’s best swing dancers.
