What is Swing?

Originating in Harlem New York, swing not only refers to that toe tapping rhythm within many forms of Jazz music, but is also a term given to a collection of the most fantastic partner and solo dances including the Lindy Hop and the Charleston. The vibrance of the jazz and swing era of the 1920’s to 40’s continues to exist in Leeds, the UK and beyond within the ever expanding network of swing dance enthusiasts who promote its revival.

What to look forward to with Swing Soc?

Our Thursday classes are relaxed and cater for every level throughout the year, so there is no need to worry about starting midterm. They will give you the foundations to take onto the social dance floor and once confident enough there may even be opportunities for the brave to impress with jaw dropping aerials.

In addition, weekly events for social dancing run by the society and the greater swing community provide a multitude of possibilities for meeting and dancing with an extraordinary range of swing dance fanatics.

 Camps and Workshops

We attend the best camps across the UK and always get the best deals and offers for our members. You can also benefit by learning from first-rate swing teachers with varying styles and techniques at our frequent workshops. We run various trips throughout the year to camps such as 'DJAM', 'Goodnight Sweetheart' and Leeds very own 'Future Sounds of Swing'

 Big Events

The annual Christmas party is definitely something to look forward to as well as the LUU Dance Show and Competition. The LUU Dance Show is always amazing and this year members who had only been dancing 4-5 months took part and blew the competition away with their superb performance.

Last year, in celebration of our 10th Anniversary, Swing Soc hosted the first University Camp. This included international teachers and a Saturday night party which saw party goers dancing the night away and into the wee small hours of the morning. And this year, SwingSoc will be taking a trip to sunny Barcalona with over 30 members to be taught by world renowned teachers!

Charity and Voluntary Performances

We are involved in ‘Lindy at the Light’ every year, a charity performance run by the local lindy scene and includes dancers from across Yorkshire, which raises funds in aid of the NSPCC. We also enjoy doing performances to entertain schools and nursing homes across Leeds, so if your planning an event and want dancers, please don't hesitiate to get in touch and see how we can help

 Socials

There is much much more to enjoy with Swing Soc, even if it’s just a drink in the Union bar after class. We’re a sociable bunch so come and join us! We run quiz nights, film nights and just generaly jollyness often involving cake! Here at SwingSoc we really enjoy a good cake.

Classes

We welcome all levels of dancers from absoloute beginners to those who have been daning for years. Theres no need to bring a partner as we change partners in class. All we request is for you to wear comfy clothing and preferably no heels. And don't worry, we're a friendy bunch who love to make new friends!
