Modern Dance

About Us

Coming to University and feel like you'll miss your old dance school? Want to learn how to dance from scratch? Well the Modern Dance Society could be exactly what you are looking for!

We are the largest dance society in Leeds University Union, enrolling around 150 members each year. We give you the opportunity to learn new and different styles of dance, or to simply improve on skills you already have. We are a friendly, laid back society committed to spreading our love of dance amongst fellow dancers.

Classes

JAZZ

We hold weekly Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced jazz classes.

TAP

We hold weekly Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced tap classes.

CONTEMPORARY

We hold weekly Beginner and Improver contemporary classes. This style includes aspects of freework and choreography as well as structured choreography and contemporary technique.

COMMERCIAL STREET DANCE

We hold weekly Beginner and Improver commercial street classes.

TECHNIQUE + LIMBERING CLASS

Improving your dance technique and flexibility!

Levels

Beginner - for those who have never danced before
Intermediate/Improvers - for those who want to improve on their skills
Advanced - for those who have danced for a number of years to a higher standard
All - EVERYONE welcome

Competition Squad

We plan to take part in a number of university dance competitions this year, and will therefore be running a competition class in Jazz, Tap, Contemporary and Street. If you are at an advanced level at your style of dance, love performing and are prepared to be committed, then being a part of one or more of the competition squads will be a lot of fun! We will not be holding auditions for these, and will let you know about joining these classes at the beginning of term.

Show

Leeds University Union put on a big show every year for all the dance societies to take part in. We feature greatly in the show, and every class gets a chance to do a number and perform! This is the highlight of the year as everyone gets to show their friends and fellow dancers what they have been practicing all year! Taking part is a lot of fun and very social with nights out during show week as well!

Membership

Initial membership to join the society costs £30. On top of that, you must pay £10 per dance style. This covers you for weekly classes in this style ALL YEAR plus participation in the show and any small performances you may take part in during the year.

For example, if you wish to take tap, commercial street and commercial bollywood, you would pay £30+£10+£10+£10 = £60 which gets you 3 hourly classes a week for the whole year!!!

(provisionally, the competittion squad will have an inital fee of £5)

You must sign up for a class before you pay, as some of the classes have waiting lists, and you won't have to pay until you have a definite place in a class! E-mail or facebook us if you would like to join a class!
