No Leeds Bradford Airport Expansion
What are you doing?
Leeds Bradford International Aiport want to increase their passenger numbers from the current 2.6m per year to 5.1m in 2016 and 8.2m in 2030.
To make way for this expansion they want to expand their terminal building by two stories. We are here to say no to LBA expansion.
Why are you doing it?
Following the Climate Change Act 2008, all businesses and households in Leeds will have to reduce their C02 emissions year on year, however if the expansion goes ahead the airport will eventually use all of the city's carbon budget. We won’t even be able to turn on a low energy light bulb!
The increase of up to 70,000 flights per year will also mean more noise for students living under the flight path in Headingley and even more traffic.
How are you doing it?
Members of Leeds City Council will meet on the 19th March to decide whether or not to approve the expansion. These councilors are therefore currently the primary target of the campaign. We are meeting with them personally as well as sending objection letters to their offices.
Alongside this direct lobbying we are trying to increase public awareness of the expansion through popular actions to gain press coverage and building links with people living locally to the airport through public meetings. To achieve this we have organized into five working groups: Action, Lobbying, Outreach, Research and Media.
What have you achieved so far?
We have built a coalition against the expansion including Friends of the Earth, Stop Climate Chaos, TIDAL and local residents of Guisley and Yeadon.
The Media collective have built a web site and a logo whilst Research have produced extensive briefings for meeting with councilors and MPs.
Members of the Lobbying collective have begun to set up and attend these meetings whilst the Action group also staged a demo outside the council meeting with polar bear costumes and bright yellow No LBA Expansion t-shirts. The campaign has a great momentum so come and join it!
81 people turned up to the No Leeds Bradford Airport Expansion protest picnic on Saturday 25th April.
