What's happening?

On October 12th the Browne Review proposed a rise in fees of between £7,000 to £10,000. This was followed by the Government’s Comprehensive Spending Review published on 20th October, outlining massive cuts to public services.

On November 10th 50,000 people gathered on the streets of London to demonstrate against the proposed cuts.  700 students from Leeds attended the protest, which was the largest student protest in a generation. See photos from the march on our Facebook group.

On November 24th, students, lecturers, pupils and parents came together to march in Leeds.  3000 walked from the Parkinson Building at the University of Leeds to reach the rallying point at Leeds Art Gallery. Read more about the Leeds march and watch our video here.

On 9th December, MPs voted to raise fees to up to £9000.  The Union lobbied hard, taking students to London in the final hours leading up to the vote.  The campaign news link at the bottom of the page features all the latest developments and statements.

Why is the Union doing this?

We're campaigning against cuts to higher education because students have asked us to. The Idea was put forward to the Better Union forum in October, and an independent panel of students voted in support of it.  Find out more about how we make decision here.

In short, we're opposed to cuts and trebling fees because we believe they will severely limit access to higher education for students from poorer backgrounds.  Read Trebling fees is a a disgrace to see the negative impact the changes will bring.
