Welcome to Leeds University Union Registered charity no. 1136742

Exec Blog

The blog of the six elected leaders of your students' union, working full time to make your time in Leeds even better. Find out more.

Are you the next leader of Black History Month?

Are you interested or involved in Black or Asian history, culture and community? Are you passionate about student-run events and campaigns? Do you want to run a well established program with a £1000 budget?! This is for you!

Every October LUU takes part in celebrating UK Black History Month. Clubs and societies organise events which spark thought, discussion and celebration of a diverse Black history - from Africa, to Asia, Latin America to the Arab Nations and the Middle East!

We’re looking for student coordinators who will work alongside the Equality and Diversity Officer Charlie Hopper and a professional marketing team to run BHM 2012! As a team, you will design a vision for the month and be responsible for recruiting and organising societies or individual students to run events that make up the program, as well as promoting Black History Month across campus and the city!

You should apply if you have any of the following:

·         Experience running campaigns or events

·         A creative flare and great people skills

·         Great money management

·         Good connections with local black or Asian community groups

·         Links with a wide range of clubs and societies

Applications are welcomed from students of any race, ethnic background or study-type, and we'd particularly love to hear from a range of International students and Postgrads.

What will I get out of it?

As well as getting to run your ideal Black History Month, this is a unique opportunity to work within a multi-million pound charity and one of the biggest and best student unions in the country. Working within a dynamic student team, the Exec and professional staff – this is a volunteer opportunity that doesn’t come along every day!

Availability:

The position will need no more than 1hr a week in May, and up to 1hour a fortnight in June, July and August. You will need to be most available in September and October, when the coordinating team will be needed for 2 hours a week minimum.

Please answer a few questions below and return to Charlie Hopper – C.hopper@leeds.ac.uk – before 6pm Friday 27th April.

If you are very interested in the position but have concerns about time you might be available, please let Charlie know as LUU will always be flexible and accommodate wherever possible.
