What it feels like to have 8000 people vote for you

I remember those fateful weeks this time last year well.

Standing in the rain holding wet flyers, wondering where else I’d rather be. I had already annoyed numerous students and two of my mates had had enough of telling people to “VOTE BJ FOR EDUCATION”!

I remember thinking is this all worth it?

In my first week in office I had contributed to the Union issuing a vote of no confidence in David Willetts, a government minister. Later, I would go on to defend and promote student’s rights at the highest board meetings in the University, get experience of being a trustee of a charity and drop peppers on the VC’s white carpet.

Some of the more surreal moments are also some of the best and are great for experience. Doing radio interviews for BBC Leeds, cooking a Smoked Mackerel Risotto on BBC News and writing press statements for the Union are all things that make every day as an Exec different, different but amazing.

That’s the thing. You might be wondering whether you want to, or whether you can run for it. I’ve been in your position. Other than being a School Rep, I fell into the role. And I haven’t regretted it since.

So what I’m trying to explain is that if you’re interested in leading the Union as a job, meeting some fantastic people along the way and having one of the best years of your life then really think about it.

I’ll honestly never forget that moment when you’re name gets called out in the Terrace, after 8000 people have voted. Unreal. Nothing compares to that.
