Leeds ‘Number One' for students

Winner NUS Awards 2009

NUS awards place Leeds as best Students' Union in the UK

Leeds University Union has been named the number one students’ union in Britain, by the people who really know – the students.

In the recent NUS awards ceremony held in London, Leeds University Union won the ‘NUS Higher Education Union of the Year’ award. Leeds was selected from over 60 students' unions across the UK for this award.

This is the first time Leeds has won this prestigious NUS award, which recognises outstanding achievement and demonstration of best practice in a higher education students’ union. This award is in association with the Student Union Evaluation Initiative (SUEI), where Leeds was the only students’ union in the country to receive the gold award in July last year.

Leeds continues to develop and improve the Union, and its services, for its students, in a variety of ways. Staying at the forefront, the Union is currently undergoing a strategic review and will be announcing its new four year plan in the near future.

Laura McFarlane-Shopes, Communications and Internal Affairs Officer said: “Leeds University Union is an organisation that constantly aspires to improve itself by campaigning harder, reaching more students and providing the better possible service to every member who comes through our door. This award is a credit to the long term vision, hard work and dedication from our staff and students, and we are very proud.”

Vice-Chancellor Professor Michael Arthur added: “This is a fantastic achievement by our students, and is richly-deserved recognition for all their hard work.”

Student ‘funamblers’ raise £858.80

Mon 10 Aug 2009

Hundreds raised for great cause

A variety of musicians, circus skill performers and enthusiastic students took to Leeds city centre streets on Sunday 7th June for a day of 'random street entertainment' and raised £858.50 for Macmillan Cancer Support and Leeds Mind.

Despite weather reports predicting heavy rain, ‘funamblers’ met in Leeds University campus at 11.00am with the sun poking through the clouds. The students split into groups and spent the whole day performing and collecting around the city centre.

Co-organiser Edward Pinkney said, "We really put our hearts into livening up the city centre for the day. Highlights include acrobatics on Briggate, a singalong at Leeds city train station, and the juggling of items chosen by the public – at one time a trilbly hat, a water bottle and a shoe!"

The event was supported by Leeds University Union’s RAG and mental health society ‘The Mind Matters’. Ben Monypenny, coordinator of RAG said: "The funamble was a great example of a RAG Raid going just right. The musicians and street performers added the ‘fun’ and the collectors did a brilliant job of collecting change from the Sunday shoppers. Everybody worked really hard and had a great time and the total raised on the day speaks for itself. The event was a huge success.”
